Amsterdam is the best known city in the Netherlands, and one with an oddly mixed reputation. It is a city which simply offers such a vast array of experiences, that most, if not all, travellers will fall in love with one of its many aspects. There’s the party scene, including the infamous cafes and red light district, but that’s just one, very small part of Amsterdam and one you can easily bypass. Aside from this there are the beautiful streets, cobbled, and sporting beautiful architecture, many ending with a bridge to cross one of the many canals, or a square, filled with restaurants, bars and plenty of other things to see and do. There’s also a great museum selection here, with the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum two of the most popular, though there are also slightly more unconventional ones such as the torture and sex museums. There’s also places to visit, such as the Anne Frank House, The Heineken Experience and the floating flower market, as well as a zoo, plenty of parks and of course, the Royal Palace.
Rotterdam is the next largest city in the Netherlands and is best known for its port, where you’ll see countless cruise ships and cargo ships come and go. That said, its streets are still filled with beautiful architecture and you’ll still find plenty of history here, it’s just that Rotterdam has a different relationship with its past. Whilst Amsterdam is all about preservation, Rotterdam is innovative and forward thinking, giving it a completely different vibe. For art, you can choose to see the classic at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, or for something a little more modern, the Witte de With, Centre for Contemporary Art or the Gallery Kralingen is where you’ll want to be. Besides these two cities, there are of course a plethora of other smaller cities, towns and village including The Hague, Leiden, Utrect and Haarlem.
No matter where you find yourself in the Netherlands, you’ll find a similar array of traditional and local cuisine that you must try. Snacking in the Netherlands is especially addictive, with the traditional ‘bitterballen’, (deep fried crispy meatballs), ‘stroopwafel’ (two thin waffles stuck together with caramel) and ‘patatje oorlog’ (chips with satay sauce, mayo and onions) being some of our favourites. There’s also a lot of fresh fish available, as well as a great Indonesian cuisine scene in some of the bigger cities. If you do find yourself in one of the big cities, you may also want to try out one of the FEBO vending machines, which sell an array of Dutch hot snacks such as hamburgers, kroketten and frinkandellen.
So whether you choose to enjoy a chic city break cycling through the streets or down by the canals, or head out into the countryside to spot windmills, you can book a private jet to the Netherlands with Air Charter Service and all this beautiful country has to offer.
