Flying aid to the hurricane-hit U.S. Virgin Islands

In May 2020, the United States’ Federal Emergency Management Agency asked ACS to help transport field hospital equipment from Washington to the Virgin Islands following a hurricane.

The cargo was urgently needed but local airports couldn’t support an aircraft large enough to move it all on one flight, so we decided to split the consignment between two aircraft and drop each shipment directly to the island where it was needed.

Our Solution

Road transfer: Seattle > Fort Lauderdale

Air Charter: Fort Lauderdale > Saint Croix and Saint Thomas

Aircraft: Lockheed L100 Hercules

The airport at Saint Thomas doesn’t have the necessary equipment to unload a wide-bodied aircraft, so we needed to transport the shipment on a cargo plane with a bulk loading rear door. Luckily our expert team was able to source a suitable Lockheed L100 Hercules within two hours of receiving the request. The aircraft was based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, so we advised the client to drive the cargo there rather than incurring additional costs flying the aircraft to Washington to collect it.

The Finer Details

Unrivalled Service: By using our trucking team to transport the cargo from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale, we saved the client over $100,000 without compromising the timings of the charter.

24/7 Service: Our 24-hour operations team kept in constant contact with the truck drivers and helped to oversee the flights, updating the client throughout the process.
