Having served 368,393 passengers in 2014 alone, Alta Airport is widely acknowledged as the busiest airport in Finnmark County. As the first airport built in the small town of Alta during German occupation of Norway, the airport became a central part of the German military activity. After the war, an extra runway was completed, with services first operated by Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) in 1964. Since then, Alta Airport has opened in a new passenger terminal (2009), featuring car rental desks, check-in machines, restaurants and comfortable waiting lounges with free Wi-Fi access.
